Phi Theta Kappa chapter earns multiple honors at regional convention

Brazosport College Psi Psi Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa recently earned multiple awards and accolades — including being named as one of the top chapters in the state — at the Phi Theta Kappa Texas Regional Convention in Houston.

Among the honors awarded to the BC program was being named a Top Texas Chapter for the fifth consecutive year. Only 18 of the approximately 81 chapters in the Texas region earn this honor.

BC’s group was also recognized as a Continued Excellence Chapter, an honor that includes chapters that have earned Texas Top Chapter or Most Distinguished Chapter for three consecutive years.

One of the reasons BC is regularly ranked among the state’s top chapters is the high-quality work achieved by its students. As a result, this was recognized at the conference, as well.

One of the biggest of these honors was earning an Honors of Action Award of Distinction for Theme 1. The Honors in Action Project is an in-depth project that includes academic research, analysis, planning and collaboration, all based on a particular theme. The current study project was “Transformations: Acknowledging, Assessing and Achieving Change,” and was broken into nine themes. BC’s group’s project was in Theme 1, “Networks of Life,” with their project being named the best project in the theme.

Before the conference ended, BC also earned a College Project Award of Merit and was named a five-star chapter.

“Our officer team did amazing work by leading the chapter through their Honors in Action and College Project last year,” said advisor Cassie Bruner. “Their dedication to these two important Phi Theta Kappa projects, on top of their school work, jobs, families and other commitments, was truly incredible.

“While each year I am amazed at how diligently our chapter works on these projects, it is incredibly satisfying to see them receive recognition such as what they received this year at our Texas Regional Convention,” she added.

Chapter President Cristina DeHoyos was also recognized for the Hall of Honor for Outstanding Officers, while Bruner received an Award of Service for her work on the Advisory Board, we well as a Horizon Award for advisors.

The BC Phi Theta Kappa chapter will next participate in the Phi Theta Kappa Catalyst international convention on April 4 through 7 in Orlando, Florida.
