STUDENT ART SHOW – WCJC Art Show highlights student talent

Wharton County Junior College Art Instructor Dianne Curtis discusses the finer details of a drawing submitted for this year’s Student Art Show. The exhibition is currently on display in the hallway of the Duson-Hansen Fine Arts Building on the Wharton campus.

WHARTON, TEXAS – Viewing fine art doesn’t require a trip to a metropolitan museum, thanks to the Wharton County Junior College Student Art Show.

The show – comprising 22 original pieces of student art – is currently on display in the hallway of the Duson-Hansen Fine Arts Building on the Wharton campus and will remain open for public viewing until the end of the Spring 2019 semester. An awards presentation is scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday, April 26.

Award winners will receive scholarships to help defray costs of enrolling in future art classes.

“I really like this particular show because it involves almost all freshman students and it’s fascinating to see their skills developing over time,” said WCJC Art Instructor Dianne Curtis. “We have some very talented artists at WCJC.”

Though raw talent is clearly evident in the student entries, Curtis stresses that dedication and hard work are key components to crafting a masterpiece.

“An artist must be internally motivated,” she said.

The bulk of this year’s entries centers on drawing and charcoals, skills developed by students in Drawing 1 and Foundations of Art classes.

Students who contribute to the show will have their work judged by WCJC faculty volunteers. Top exhibitors will be offered art scholarships for the fall 2019 semester.
